Combining the excitement of a cargo ship voyage between Cairns and Cape York with the adventure of a Cape York Safari. In a style reminiscent of bygone coastal steamers, experience the colour and serenity of a Barrier Reef voyage, the magic of the Daintree, the magnificent isolation of the Peninsula wilderness and the diverse cultures of the Cape and Torres Straits.

The tours overnight stays quite often reflect the unique nature of the sparsely inhabited regions in which you travel: Forest shrouded resorts and lodges; hotels and motels to “No Frill” cattle station cabins and cabin tent accommodation along the track where no alternatives exist. All are clean and comfortable, the hospitality genuine, open and friendly, and the cuisine generous and appetising. 240V Electricity at station accommodation is generally not available between 10pm & 7am.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 FRIDAY(D)

Depart Cairns, M.V “Trinity Bay”.
Mid-day pick from your Cairns accommodation. At 80 metres and over 3000 tonnes the Trinity Bay is the largest cargo vessel ship servicing the Torres Strait communities.

DAY 2 SATURDAY(BLD)

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Total relaxation as you enjoy the company of the crew and new shipboard companions.

DAY 3 SUNDAY(BLD)

Thursday Island, Horn Island. “Barge Day”.
The focus of all attention today are the wharves on Thursday & Horn Islands, as the MV Trinity Bay disgorges its cargo of fuel, building materials, indeed everything needed by these remote island communities. Time to explore legendary Thursday Island and Horn Island. (Own costs)

DAY 4 MONDAY (BLD)

Seisia, Bamaga, Punsand Bay.
Another “barge day” to Seisia wharf, the sea port for Cape York’s five aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. A short stop at Seisia
Islander settlement. 2 nights accommodation: Punsand Bay Private Reserve – Beachfront Cabin Tent (ensuite facilities)

DAY 5 TUESDAY (BLD)

Cape York, Somerset.
An unforgettable day of achievement and interest. We stand at the very tip of our continent. Visit the ruins of Somerset, (road conditions permitting) with pristine beaches and rocky headlands.

DAY 6 WEDNESDAY(BLD)

Jardine River, Fruitbat Falls, Moreton Station.
Anticipation and excitement as we commence our overland trek. Retracing the paths of our earliest overlanders, we cross the Jardine River to Fruitbat Falls, a Mecca for “off road” travellers. Enjoy a refreshing swim and lunch before we continue negotiating river crossings and bush tracks to arrive at Moreton Telegraph Station, on the banks of the Wenlock River. Overnight accommodation (2 nights) Cabin Tent – shared facilities (twin share fully screened tents with beds, linen).

DAY 7 THURSDAY (BLD)

Weipa, Wenlock River.
Time for a guided nature walk along this lightly forested waterway before we cross the sandy Wenlock River. Travel south to Batavia Downs Station then detour west to the Gulf of Carpentaria through huge cattle runs and Aboriginal tribal lands to the bauxite-mining town of Weipa. A veritable “Oasis in the wilderness” and providing further contrast to your experience of this last frontier. Today, an optional Weipa Mine Tour (own cost) is available.

DAY 8 FRIDAY (BLD)

Archer River, Coen, Musgrave.
Across rolling Piccaninny Plains, a lunch stop at the Archer River and then via historic Coen to arrive at Musgrave pioneer Telegraph Station, which is over 100 years old.

Overnight accommodation: Musgrave – share facilities

DAY 9 SATURDAY (BLD)

Lakefield National Park, Cooktown.
We head east towards Princess Charlotte Bay and enter the massive bird and animal sanctuary of Lakefield National Park. The waterfowl teem in lily fringed billabongs and an opportunity to safely view crocodiles in their natural habitat. Travel over the legendary Battle Camp Range to historical Cooktown. An eventful afternoon sightseeing and viewing significant landmarks and sites so important to all Australians.

Overnight accommodation: Seaview Motel – ensuite facilities

DAY 10 SUNDAY (BL)

Bloomfield, Cape Tribulation, Cairns.
Crossing The wide Bloomfield River marks the start of our drive over the controversial “Bloomfield Track”. Jungle green heights descend to the very edge of the Great Barrier Reef, with tantalising glimpses of deserted beaches and fringing coral. Through the famous World Heritage Rainforest across the Daintree River, then travel via the scenic road to Cairns.

Hotel transfers on arrival in Cairns completes your holiday.

After a fitting celebration we head south across the mighty Jardine River and travel through Cape York’s wilderness.
ITINERARY

DAY 1 CAIRNS – DAINTREE RIVER – CAPE TRIBULATION

Journey along one of Australia’s most picturesque coastlines to Port Douglas. Travel to the Daintree National Park and cruise along the Daintree River, spotting saltwater crocodiles and other wildlife. Then head to Cape Tribulation, where age-old rainforest meets spectacular coastline. This is the only place in Australia where you can experience the splendor of tropical rainforest just a stone’s throw from the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. This astoundingly beautiful region was named Cape Tribulation because of the difficulties experienced by James Cook when his ship beached on the reef off-shore. Stay: Cape Tribulation, Fern tree Rainforest Lodge, set amid lush coastal rainforest

DAY 2 BLOOMFIELD TRACK – COOKTOWN

Travel the remote and rugged Bloomfield Track to historical Cooktown. Journey through the dense rainforest with steep climbs and several creek crossings before stopping at Bloomfield Falls where you are joined by a local Indigenous guide for an interpretive tour. Visit the curious Lions Den Hotel before continuing on to Black Mountain and Cooktown. Stay: Two Nights: The Sovereign Resort Hotel, in the heart of historical Cooktown

DAY 3 COOKTOWN – LOCALLY GUIDED INTERPRETIVE TOUR

Explore Cooktown, gateway to the Cape York Peninsula. It was here that James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770 – making Cooktown the first European settlement on Australian soil. This un spoilt coastal town is full of natural beauty and fascinating history. Visit the James Cook Museum and the cemetery with its Chinese shrine, and discover nature’s powerhouse in the Botanic Gardens. With a local Indigenous guide from Guurrbi Tours, travel through the dramatic landscape on the outskirts of Cooktown and visit three Indigenous rock art sites, including Rainbow Serpent Cave and an ancient birth site.

DAY 4 LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK

Explore Quinkan Country, ranked by UNESCO as one of the top ten rock art areas in the world and one of Queensland’s best kept secrets. Lakefield National Park is Queensland’s second largest national park at 537,000 hectares. Stretching from Princess Charlotte Bay down to Laura, the park’s near-wilderness is covered with sunbleached grasses, paper bark woodland, mangroves and rainforest. It’s home to a variety of birds including Jabirus, Brolgas and many duck species, as well as fruit bats that take to the skies in the evening, and numerous wallabies. Stay: Lotus Bird Lodge or Coen, Exchange Hotel

DAY 5 COEN – WEIPA – GULF COUNTRY

Explore the old gold mining town of Coen then drive via Mungkan Kandju National Park, with its riverine rainforest and swamps, to Weipa, on the shores of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Here, you’ll find the site of the world’s largest bauxite deposit. Weipa forms part of the Western Cape York Peninsula and offers the ideal place to see the sun set in the west over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Stay: Weipa, Albatross Hotel Resort

DAY 6 WEIPA MORETON TELEGRAPH STATION

Join a local guide for a tour of the Weipa Bauxite Mine, the largest of its kind in the world. Afterwards, continue along rugged dirt roads through remote areas of Cape York to Moreton Telegraph Station, located on the Wenlock River. The river flows all year round, although the levels can vary dramatically between the wet season and the dry season. Here, perhaps take a walk to the nearby lagoon or along the river bank. Stay: Moreton Telegraph Station: Stay in safari tents and enjoy an evening by the campfire

DAY 7 CAPE YORK PENINSULA

Skirting the Jardine River National Park, continue through the traditional lands of the Injinoo Aboriginal people. Native title handed much of this area back to the traditional owners, enabling the survival of the distinctive East and West Cape Aboriginal cultures. The journey today becomes quite adventurous when we travel on some of the original sections of the Old Telegraph Track. This route was carved out in the 1880s and some of the first telegraph poles can still be seen. Stop at Fruit Bat Falls, where there’s time for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, then cross the Jardine River by ferry and continue to Resort Bamaga. Stay: Two Nights: Resort Bamaga, a haven in the wilderness at the top of Cape York

DAY 8 EXPLORE CAPE YORK

Today you’ll travel to the tip of the Cape York Peninsula. Disembark near beautiful Frangipani Beach and take a mildly challenging but
thoroughly enjoyable walk to the tip of the peninsula to experience being at the Australian mainland’s most northerly point. After taking in the sweeping views over the Torres Strait, travel to historic Somerset, once the official government residence of the cape. Then return to the resort and enjoy time at leisure.

DAY 9 THURSDAY ISLAND

Today cruise across Endeavour Strait to Thursday Island. One of around 100 islands that make up the Torres Strait group, Thursday Island is home to 3,000 people, primarily of Melanesian descent. Whilst today it is a multicultural outpost, Thursday Island was once a base for pearling luggers. With a local guide, discover the island’s intriguing history and get a feel for island life in the Torres Strait. Stay: Thursday Island, Jardine Motel

DAY 10 CAPE YORK – CAIRNS

This morning, transfer to Horn Island aboard the local ferry. Then, board a flight over the vast Cape York Peninsula.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 THURSDAY – CAIRNS, CAPE TRIBULATION, COOKTOWN AREA (LD)

Your tour starts with an early morning pick up from your Hotel/Motel accommodation. We drive through the pristine Daintree Rainforests and over the soaring verdant heights of the Bloomfield Track to Cooktown. A step back in time as we explore this historic port.

DAY 2 FRIDAY – LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK (BD)

A morning of sightseeing and viewing significant landmarks and sites so important to all Australians. (Lunch at own cost today) We travel via the rugged Battlecamp Range, pioneer cattle stations and the old coach road to arrive at the massive wildlife haven, Lakefield National Park.

DAY 3 SATURDAY – MUSGRAVE, COEN, ARCHER RIVER (BLD)

Historic interludes as we visit the last Telegraph Station on Cape York, Musgrave, and the once vibrant gold rush town of Coen, before reaching our overnight stop at the Archer River.

DAY 4 SUNDAY – IRON RANGE NATIONAL PARK (BLD)

Cross the Wenlock and Pascoe Rivers before entering Iron Range National Park via Tozer’s Gap. This park features the largest area of tropical lowland rainforest remaining in Australia. Rare fauna and flora include cuscus, palm cockatoos, eclectus parrots, green pythons, palms and orchids. There is also impressive coastal and mountain range scenery. Overnight camp in Iron Range next 2 nights.

DAY 5 MONDAY – PORTLAND ROADS, CHILLI BEACH, WW2 SITES (BLD)

Portland Roads, once a vital sea port for miners and the wartime airfields, now affords the locals a relaxed lifestyle in an idyllic tropical setting. War time gun emplacements are silent sentinels around the headland; some are homes to the locals at the ‘Roads. Chilli Beach is wide and long and fringed with palms. A truly magical spot overlooking Restoration Island, Bligh’s landing site in 1792. We explore and learn about the gold workings of the 1930′s and the area around the airfield at Iron Range where there were major military installations.

DAY 6 TUESDAY – BATAVIA GOLDFIELDS, WEIPA (BLD)

Travel west to visit the old Batavia Gold Fields, an abandoned mining town. Then travel North by West across Piccaninny Plains and boundless savannah to Weipa, on the Gulf of Carpentaria. A veritable “Oasis in the wilderness” and providing further contrast to your experience of this last frontier.

DAY 7 WEDNESDAY – WENLOCK RIVER, MORETON STATION (BD)

A really challenging route today as we ford fast flowing streams and traverse rugged 4WD roads to overnight at the ideallic Twin Falls. Basic facilities.

DAY 9 FRIDAY – JARDINE RIVER, LOYALTY BEACH (BLD)

Across the free flowing Jardine River by cable ferry, a brief refuelling stop at Bamaga and we drive via Lockerbie to our base camp at Loyalty Beach Campground. for the next 2 nights.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 CAIRNS – CAPE YORK (LD)

Meet fellow travelers when our friendly staff collect you from your Cairns accommodation and take you to the Cairns airport to board your scenic coastal flight from Cairns to Horn Island in the Torres Strait. When you arrive enjoy a friendly chat with locals fishing on the Horn Island jetty before you set sail on the azure blue waters of the Torres Strait aboard the inter island ferry bound for Seisia, via Thursday Island. Your expert Cape York tour guide will meet you when you arrive on the mainland in Seisia and officially, welcome you on tour in Cape York. Once all your luggage is loaded into our air-conditioned four wheel drive tour vehicle we take a short drive to stunning Loyalty Beach and set up our base camp for a relaxing afternoon of socialising, knowledge sharing and sunset drinks on the beach.

DAY 2 CAPE YORK (BLD)

Make sure your camera lens is clean and batteries charged because today is the day we capture your signature Cape York photo on the absolute tip of Australia. Walk as a group to “The Tip” at the very end of Cape York Peninsula, celebrate together and grab that all important photo evidence that proves “I did it!” Your expert guide will take you on a walking around the area and share historical stories and eco-facts before we return to our beachfront campsite at Loyalty Beach. Spend the afternoon relaxing, fishing, or learning cooking secrets from your camp oven chef (a.k.a tour guide) then enjoy a drink while you watch the sunset. Tonight we enjoy camp oven cooking and sleep under the stars.

DAY 3 BAMAGA – TWIN FALLS (BLD)

Our southward journey begins today as we travel through Bamaga and across the famous Jardine River aboard the old world cable ferry. See if you can spot a crocodile sunning itself on the banks then buckle up for some real four wheel drive action on the corrugated Old Telegraph Track which brings us to one of the most stunning and talked about places on tour, Twin Falls on the Elliott River. We set up camp in naturally lush Wet Tropics rainforest surrounded by the peace and beauty of two crystal clear swimming holes, each with their own flowing waterfalls. Take a refreshing swim, go for a rainforest walk, spot some tropical birds or simply relax and enjoy the
peace and awesome natural beauty surrounding you.

DAY 4 TWIN FALLS – BRAMWELL STATION (BLD)

Get set for some more four wheel drive action today! Our exciting journey from Twin Falls to Bramwell station will see us return to the Old Telegraph track, splashing through creeks, tackling steep inclines and ditches as we make our way out of the rainforest and into the unusual landscapes of Heathland Reserve. Marvel at the contrast between low scrub country and the magnificently strong giant termite mounds. The work of tiny creatures, some of these termite mounds stand taller than humans and are always a favorite photo opportunity and talking point on tour. After a brief stop at Heathland Reserve, we continue to Bramwell Cattle Station and experience the true bush hospitality offered on Australia’s Northern most cattle station and the largest of its kind in Cape York.

Station owner Wendy Bramwell, will often come and greet your group herself and share stories about Bramwell Station, their expansion into earth moving and tourism, as well as environmental and legislative issues that have changed the nature of station life in the Cape. After this very special experience, we set up our camp and spend the night on Bramwell Station.

DAY 5 BRAMWELL STATION – WEIPA (BLD)

Rise and shine for an early start on our journey south, across the Wenlock River towards Weipa, the largest town and mining hub of Cape York. We arrive in Weipa around midday leaving you plenty of time to explore. Why not grab some bait and go fishing, browse shops, or visit the Laundromat on the main street before you return to base camp to enjoy some more camp oven treats and spend another peaceful night camping under the stars.

DAY 6 COEN – MUSGRAVE STATION (BLD)

This morning is your last chance to learn more about Weipa on a guided tour of Weipa bauxite mine and township (included in tour cost). Learn about Weipa’s history, lifestyle and how the town is a driving force in the Cape York economy. Or you can just sleep in and relax around our campsite before we re-board the four wheel drive mid morning, bound for Old Musgrave Telegraph Station. We continue south along the Peninsula Development Road, through the remote old gold rush township of Coen. We cross the Archer River, and pass the little known RAAF base in Sherger. This base became less secret in September 2010 when the Australian Government announced it would be used to accommodate up to 300 male asylum seekers. We also stop off today at the Peninsula Quarantine Station and gain an interesting insight into the unique Quarantine needs of The Cape. Relax and enjoy the bush scenery as we continue south to The Old Musgrave Telegraph Station where we will spend the night. Take time to look at and reflect upon Musgrave Station’s historica collection of memorabilia and old photos of the area, and allow yourself to be humbled by the amazing hurdles overcome by hardworking people from the bush.

DAY 7 MUSGRAVE STATION – LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK (BLD)

Enjoy another Cape York sunrise today as we continue south along the Peninsula Development Road from Musgrave bound for wildlife haven and fishermen’s oasis, Lakefield National Park. Spot threatened species including the Red Goshawk, Lakeland DownsMouse and Spectacled Hare-Wallaby and watch more common Cape York wildlife including, Ibis, Bustards, Jabirus, Brolgas, wild pigs and crocodiles going about their daily routines. You can also go fishing for Barramundi. Lakefield National Park is renowned for bird watching and its abundance of top fishing spots full of Barramundi and Mangrove Jack. We set up camp by the Normanby River and spend a starry night in the heart Lakefield National Park.

DAY 8 LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK – COOKTOWN (BL)

Today we leave Lakefield National Park and get firsthand experience of its plentiful billabongs, waterhole’s and creeks on our journey. Rise and shine early today to experience the magnificent sunrise and early morning view from Grassy Hill lookout before we board the four wheel drive and make our final journey from Cooktown to Cairns. Shortly after we leave Cooktown we make a quick stop at Black Mountain to see the bouncing stones and learn the legend of this area’s deep, spiritual past before we continue on to the historic Lion’s Den Pub and enjoy a cool drink. From here we tackle the rugged and famous “Bloomfield Track” where we cross the Bloomfield River and journey into the oldest surviving tropical rainforests on earth in Cape Tribulation and the Daintree. Make sure your camera is handy as this area is full of wonderful wildlife spotting and photo opportunities.

Take advantage of your last chance to spot a wild crocodile when we board the ferry and cross the Daintree River. Reflect on the highlights of your trip and exchange email addresses with your fellow travelers while we make the scenic coastal journey from the Daintree, past Port Douglas and onto Cairns where we will safely return you to your Cairns accommodation of its plentiful billabongs, waterhole’s and creeks on our journey towards Cooktown.

We visit the township of Laura, see the new Laura Ranger Station and enjoy a drink at the historic Old Laura Homestead before we lock in the hubs for a bumpy drive along the corrugated Battlecamp Road. See the environmental landscape change as we travel down the coast into fertile farming country and arrive at Cooktown. Cooktown is rich with Australian history and you are free to spend the afternoon exploring its highlights and landmarks including Grassy Hill and the site where Captain James Cook landed the Endeavour in 1778. Tonight we give the tents and camp oven a break and eat out at a restaurant and stay in accommodation instead.
